Fearless Vampire Killers: Halloween Blog VI

Today’s Halloween blog is a tribute to a cult icon of the horror genre, a B-movie behemoth with the best chin this side of Metropolis, he is of course the one, the only…BRUCE CAMPBELL!!!

My first taste of Bruce Campbell unwittingly came from his cameo in the first Spiderman film as the wrestling announcer that gives Peter Parker the web-slinging moniker we all know and love (he also popped up as the hilarious – though after hours gaming rather obnoxious – tutorial voice on the Spiderman video game, refused Peter Parker entry to see his beloved Mary jane’s play – BOOHOO – and a ludicrously accented French waiter). With my love of Sam Raimi solidified, and because of the praise of heroes like Edgar Wright, I dug deeper and into his history and discovered the glorious Evil Dead Trilogy. The barmiest tongue-in-cheek horror films I have ever seen (perhaps with only Braindead in close contetion) I instantly fell in love with the lowbudget lunacy of Sam raimi’s creation and finally got to see Bruce Campbell take centre stage as Ash – the badass, one-liner laden, chainsaw wielding S-Mart store clerk doomed to grapple with the deadites unleashed from the necronomicon for all eternity. And here’s the greatest line in cinematic history – “Well, hello, Mister Fancypants. Well, I’ve got news for you, pal, you ain’t leadin’ but two things right now: Jack and shit… and Jack left town.” Who could argue with that?

Anyway, a few weeks ago we obtained the Bruce Campbell collection to check out what else he’s got hidden beneath that chin got the results so far have been brilliant (although we did struggle through half of the made for TV movie Alien Apocalypse). My Name Is Bruce (directed by Senor Campbell himself) is one of those films that without a doubt deserves the recommendation of being “brilliantly shit” and that’s the whole point! It’s a ridiculous premise (Bruce Campbell playing a washed up version of himself fighting the resurrected spirit of an Ancient Chinese Patron Saint of Bean Curd…yeah, exactly) that is both a piss-take and an homage to B-movies and Bruce Campbell is on top smarmy charm througout.

Bubba-Hotep deserves an honourary mention as this film isn’t just brilliantly shit, it’s just bloody brilliant. Campbell plays an aging Elvis Presley living out his remaining years in a retirement home after swapping places with an Elvis impersonator in the 70s. Natch, everyone thinks he’s just los this mind, he’s washed up and alone ” with a growth on his pecker” when suddenly BAM!!!! there’s a Mummy roaming the hallways sucking the souls out of the barely living for kicks. Campbell is inspired as Presley because everything he says is hilarious but at the same time he’s believable and you feel for the character – his sense of abandonment and alienation – and root for him as battling the undead revives his long lost mojo!

Anyway to end here’s a portion of Bruce Campbell’s filmography, there’s still much to learn so let’s dig in!
